Repair Vertical Landing Pads K-2 and V23 Cherry Point, NC

Reasor-Asturian JV was awarded a contract to replace existing vertical landing pads for the F-35 Program at MCAS Cherry Point. This involved the replacement of (2) 220’ x 220’ High Temperature Concrete pads in two separate locations on the airfield, asphalt apron milling and paving, asphalt seal coating, pavement marking, installation of new airfield lighting at both new pads, and replacement of existing airfield lighting in a separate location.

Project details included demo of (2) existing 200’ x 300’ concrete pads, more than 9000 tons of concrete, and excavation of 4000 CY of contaminated, unstable soil. These areas were rebuilt with (3) lifts of subbase including cement stabilized base, aggregate base, and cement stabilized base course. The high temperature concrete includes joint re-enforced concrete and fully re-enforced concrete more than 5000 CY total. RAJV installed an on-site batch plant for concrete production and an on-site lab for 3rd party testing and quality control. The concrete was treated with sodium silicate after installation to increase strength and temperature. The project also involved milling and installation of more than 8000 SY of asphalt in (3) lifts. RAJV provided Gilsonite asphalt seal coating on 5,300 SY of existing pavements. Pavement parking included painting all new airfield pavement markings at both new landing pad locations. Lighting included installation of cans and conduit for more than 40 new in-pavement lights and (4) new elevate signs. It also included replacement of more than 40 existing lights with new lights at (2) additional separate locations.

While the project was in progress, the cement that was specified for the concrete was discontinued. RA-JV worked with the government team to find a solution with new cement that did not delay the project.
